New Mexico Museum of Art
One Museum: Two Locations! The New Mexico Museum of Art has two buildings: the historic Plaza Building located on the Santa Fe Plaza and The Vladem Contemporary located in Santa Fe's Railyard Art District. One ticket grants access to both locations. The original location is at the northwest corner of the Plaza. Vladem Contemporary is located in the Railyard Arts District. From the Museum’s founding in 1917, Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico have held a special pull for artists. Originally, the building was to become the art gallery of the Museum of New Mexico. The influences of Native American, Hispanic, and European-based cultures created a unique body of work that is the basis of the New Mexico Museum of Art.
New Mexico has been called home by many famous artists. Georgia O'Keeffe, Elliot Porter, Gustave Baumann, Fritz Scholder, Maria Martinez, Bruce Naumann and Luis Jimenez are just a few of the artists who have been influenced by the beauty and culture of the state. The New Mexico Museum of Art exhibits these artists and houses significant holdings of their work plus many more.
The original New Mexico Museum of Art building dates only to 1917, but its architects looked to the past, and based the design on the 300 year-old mission churches at Acoma and other pueblos.contemporary artists.
The New Mexico Museum of Art opened in 1917 as a Contemporary Art Museum (perhaps the first in the country). Our collection is mainly 20th and 21st century American, Southwest art with an emphasis on works made by artists who have worked, lived, or been influenced by travel through the region since the introduction of the railway, around 1880. We also have an international, comprehensive photography collection and works by major artists of other periods, styles and locales.
Our Museum Shop also offers a wide array of gifts, books, art, stationery and apparel. Click the website link above for multi-day passes, multi-museum passes, and more information.
