Before You Go

Visitor Essentials

Local tips to help you make the most of your Santa Fe visit.

Altitude Matters

Santa Fe sits at 7,199 feet. Drink extra water, take it easy on day one, and go light on alcohol until you acclimate. Most people adjust in 24-48 hours.

Sun is Intense

At this elevation, UV rays are 30% stronger. Wear sunscreen (SPF 50+), a hat, and sunglasses — even on cloudy days. Lip balm with SPF is a must.

Dry Climate

Humidity hovers around 20-30%. Bring moisturizer and eye drops. Drink more water than you think you need — dehydration sneaks up fast.

What to Pack

Layers are key. Mornings and evenings can be 30°F cooler than midday. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — Santa Fe is best explored on foot. Click here for our What to Pack Guide.

Getting Around

Downtown is very walkable. A car is helpful for day trips (Taos, Bandelier, Ghost Ranch) but unnecessary for the Plaza, Canyon Road, and Railyard areas. Public transportation is available — see visitor services for options.

Best Times to Visit

September-October for fall color and fewer crowds. June-August for Opera and Indian Market. December for farolitos on Canyon Road. Every season has magic.
